Frugal Japan Wiki

Ever had some amazing frugal information you just wished you could share with someone? Ever wanted quick access to that great tip on the Frugal Japan YahooGroup, but found the site search engine wanting? Ever visited the Frugal Japan website (http://www.frugaljapan.com) and wanted to add a comment or article of your own? Well, we've got the answer to all your problems: the Frugal Japan Wiki! Check it out here: http://wiki.frugaljapan.com/

What's a wiki?

A wiki is a website or similar online resource that allows users to add and edit content collectively. The best known Wiki worldwide is, of course, Wikipedia - the online, multi-lingual encyclopedia with over 1.079 million articles and counting available online in English. Anyone can edit or contribute an article. Incidentally, did you know that the word "wiki wiki" means "rapidly" in Hawaiian?

Our Frugal wiki is the brainchild of FrugalJapan.com webmaster and all-around wonderwoman Shaney Crawford. Shaney set up our wiki in April 2006, and has also diligently seeded it with content from the FrugalJapan.com website to get us started. You'll find information on everything from frugal beverages to accommodations in Tokyo, plus some additional new topics (indicated with question marks).

Reading articles is simple: just access them as on any website. If you'd like to add your own articles or edit existing ones, there are a few basic formatting rules and simple mark-up codes. To learn how to edit, click on the "Beginner's Guide" link on the left hand column. You can use the "Sandbox" trial area to try out writing and editing articles without affecting anything important on the site. If you do edit someone else's article, it's polite to acknowledge your contribution by "signing" the article using your name in the Author box.

If you want to add a new tip to existing tips, just click on the "edit" link at the top right hand side of the article and edit the current article. The categories are by no means limitations: you can add new categories or sub-categories as well. Help us expand!

Shaney and I hope that both members of the Frugal Japan community (that would be you guys) and casual observers can both benefit from and contribute to the Frugal Wiki. Please check it out, and enjoy!

Wiki Update (October 2006)

Shaney has done a major overhaul of the Frugal Japan Wiki. The wiki is now more rationally organized, featuring an alphabetical list of tips in the "Frugal Tip Index." List of tips by topic, and about a specific place in Japan, are also available. She even included a random tip generator! As always, the wiki provides a place for members of the Frugal Japan community (including people browsing this site) to share ideas. Editing and adding to a wiki easy - read up on how at the Frugal Wiki! Unlike the YahooGroup, the Frugal Japan Wiki is permanent, easily searchable, and available to all regardless of membership. Check it out!
